Abstract:

Chiefly photograph albums and portfolios pertaining to McCone's career, particularly his roles as an executive of the California Shipbuilding Corporation (1941-1945), as Chairman of the United States Atomic Energy Commission (1958-1961), and as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (1961-1965). Includes professional photographs depicting Calship's production of Victory ships during the Second World War, several ship launchings, and various diplomatic and ceremonial events pertaining to McCone's service in the AEC and CIA during the expansion of the nuclear energy industry and the escalation of the cold war in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Among the individuals depicted are presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson; CIA leaders Allen W. Dulles, Richard Helms, William F. Raborn; Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren; and McCone's first wife Rosemary Cooper McCone and second wife Theiline Piggott. The collection contains very few snapshots or other informal images depicting McCone's private life or family affairs.

Born Jan. 4, 1902 in San Francisco, Calif. and an engineering graduate from the University of California, Berkeley in 1922, John A. McCone began his career as a riveter and eventually became a major West Coast industrialist who made his fortune in engineering, shipbuilding, and shipping. He also served in several high positions within the government under five presidents, most notably as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency for Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. Throughout his life, McCone participated in a number of civic, philanthropic, educational, and medical associations and received many awards and honoraria. McCone died on February 14, 1991 at the age of 89.
